Have you seen “Recycle Right” around the Northside neighborhoods of Pittsburgh? The six-foot-tall recycling symbol, made from iron rebar, chicken wire, and recyclables, has spent time in Fineview, Deutschtown, and has now taken up residence in Troy Hill (photo).
The piece is a way to turn litter into art - by the end of its tenure in the Northside the sculpture will be filled with recyclable litter, such as plastic water bottles and aluminum cans.
Giving these littered recyclables a new life will serve to provoke thought and engage residents and visitors in conversation and action about the amount of recyclables that become litter, as well as the issue of litter in the Northside and throughout Pittsburgh.
Recycle Right has been partially filled with recyclable litter that was cleaned up by volunteers from public spaces, and Allegheny CleanWays and the PA Resources Council will continue to work with volunteers in cleanups to complete the sculpture.
Since its debut on June 18, the Recycle Right installation has been at a community picnic in Fineview, the Deutschtown Music Festival, featured on East Ohio Street, and the Christmas in July Festival in Troy Hill - not to mention a few litter cleanups along the way!
It is currently located in the green space along Lowrie Street across from the Uni Mart in Troy Hill.
Keep an eye out for the installation as it continues to move around the Northside: to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Woods Run Branch on July 29 and at the National Night Out celebration at the library on August 2!
The sculpture was inspired by the Litter Letter Project, and built by local Northside artist Oreen Cohen. It is also a part of the “Northside Keeps it Clean” campaign to fight litter and increase recycling in Pittsburgh’s Northside neighborhoods.
The campaign, started through One Northside in partnership with the Buhl Foundation, is managed by Allegheny CleanWays and PRC.
The Recycle Right travelling art installation is funded by Pittsburgh Urban Leadership Service Experience (PULSE), and was made possible by generous material donations from The Home Depot.
Want to get involved? Volunteers are needed for litter cleanup, outreach, and to help move the sculpture. Community members are also welcome to plan independent cleanups! All it takes is a few friends, trash bags, and a walk around the block.
