Gerald Smith Water Treatment Plant Receives Partnership For Safe Water Award

The PA American Water Company's Gerald C. Smith Water Treatment Plant in Hershey, Dauphin County recently received the "President's Award" from the Partnership for Safe Water for achieving stringent individual filter performance goals for turbidity.
The Hershey plant is the 10th plant in Pennsylvania to receive this distinction. There are four phases to the PFSW.
The President's Award is an intermediate award between Phase III and Phase IV and is a significant stepping stone toward accomplishing the highest possible level of performance that can be achieved in the program, Phase IV.
Only two plants in Pennsylvania have achieved Phase IV.
The PFSW is comprised of DEP, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Pennsylvania Section American Water Works Association, and other national drinking water organizations. Its goal is to implement preventative measures to optimize treatment plant performance and protect of public health.
Only 23 water treatment plants in the U.S. have received the President’s Award.
