During this talk, we will provide a discussion of the accumulation of microplastics in environmental matrices in a drinking water reservoir and surrounding watershed located in central Pennsylvania.
Microplastics refer to particles that are less than 5 mm in size. Due to the degradation of larger plastic particles, microplastic pollution is a growing and persistent problem. Microplastics have been found virtually everywhere—in water, in soil, in plants, in animals, in the air we breathe.
Due to the wide diversity of microplastics, there is increased complexity and uncertainty in determining the level of hazard these pollutants pose to the environment and, by extension, to human health.
