PA Resources Council Sets Fall Recycling Awareness, Backyard Composting, Vermicomposting Workshops, Hard-To-Recycle, HHW Collection Events In Allegheny, Beaver Counties

The PA Resources Council Wednesday released its Fall schedule of Recycling Awareness, Backyard Composting and Vermicomposting Workshops, Hard-To Recycle Collection Events in Allegheny County.
PRC will also host Household Chemical Collection Events in Allegheny and Beaver counties.
Recycling Awareness
It’s time to talk “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse!”  PRC’s new Recycling Awareness Workshop shares answers to common questions surrounding recycling in southwestern Pennsylvania like--
-- Lids on? Lids off? Rinse? Wash? Labels on? Labels off?
-- Which plastics are acceptable?
-- What about a window? Broken plastic toys?
-- Electronics? Tires? Plastic bags? Polystyrene? Appliances? Textiles?
-- What materials are accepted curbside? What about hard-to-recycle items and household hazardous waste?
-- Unwanted pharmaceuticals?
-- Organic debris?
The workshops will be held--
-- September 25: from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., Mt. Lebanon Public Library
-- October 18: from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sewickley Public Library
The cost of the 60-minute workshop is $50 per person ($55 per couple) and includes one 32-gallon blue recycling bin.  Pre-registration is required.

Backyard Composting
Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost.  The workshops will be held--
-- September 5: from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., North Park Rose Barn
-- September 8: from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m., Ross Township Community Center
-- September 11: from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
-- September 13: from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., Sewickley Public Library
-- September 17: from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., Mt. Lebanon Public Library
-- September 19: from 6:30 – 8 p.m., South Park Home Economics Building
-- September 22: from 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Castle Shannon Library
-- September 29: from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Construction Junction, Point Breeze
-- October 7: from 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Blueberry Hill Park, Franklin Park
Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a FreeGarden EARTH compost bin, which features an 82-gallon capacity ideal for both urban and suburban settings.
This workshop series is made possible by the generous support of the Giant Eagle Foundation.
The cost of the workshop is $70 per person ($75 per couple) and includes one composting bin. Pre-registration is required.

Vermicomposting
Try indoor composting with red wiggler worms!  Build a complete vermiculture system to take home at the end of PRC’s Vermicomposting Workshops.  The workshops will be held--
-- October 13: 12:30 – 2 p.m., Ross Township Community Center
-- November 3: from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Construction Junction, Point Breeze
-- November 6: from 6:30 – 8 p.m., North Park Rose Barn
-- November 14: from 6:30 – 8 p.m., South Park Buffalo Inn
Worms produce a product (castings) that is considered an especially good soil amendment and nutrient source.  Learn how to house, feed, harvest and care for worms that produce a natural, homemade fertilizer for your lawn and garden.
Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a complete, ready-to-use vermiculture system.  
The cost of the workshop is $70 per person ($75 per couple) and includes one compost box with worms. Pre-registration is required.

Hard-To-Recycle Collections
Individuals can drop off “e-waste” such as computer towers and peripheral equipment, cell phones, printer/toner cartridges, CFLs and expanded polystyrene packaging material at no cost.
For a fee, individuals can drop off televisions and computer monitors, alkaline batteries, fluorescent tubes, printers, small Freon appliances and tires.  
Upcoming 2018 hard-to-recycle collections will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at:
-- August 25: Century III Mall, West Mifflin
-- October 6: Settlers Cabin Park

Household Chemical Collections - Allegheny, Beaver Counties
Individuals can drop off automotive fluids, household cleaners, pesticides, paints and other household chemicals for a cost of $3/gallon (a few exceptions apply), cash only.  NEW IN 2018: collections accept smoke detectors ($3/each).
Upcoming 2018 household chemical collections will be held from 9:00 to 1:00:
-- August 18: Boyce Park, Allegheny County
-- September 22: South Park, Allegheny County
-- October 13: Bradys Run Park, Beaver County
