Penn State Energy & Environmental Sustainability Labs To Host Open House Aug. 31

The Penn State Energy and Environmental Sustainability Laboratories will host a Cheese and Wine Open House on August 31 in the Nittany Lion Inn Alumni Lounge in State College, Centre County from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The open house will provide an opportunity to learn about EESL, a shared instrumentation multi-user facility with the goal of expanding research into energy and the environment.
Attendees can learn about EESL's facilities, equipment and services, as well as meet EESL researchers and employees. EESL instruments are used in a variety of fields, including agriculture, anthropology and human physiology.
EESL is supported by the Institutes of Energy and the Environment, a Penn State research organization that works to advance the energy and environmental research missions of the University. IEE does this by fostering and facilitating interdisciplinary energy and environment research, scholarship and collaboration, through funding, facilities, events and networking.
“EESL was created in order to offer researchers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge research equipment in the areas of energy and the environment,” said Odette Mina, the managing director of EESL. “The Institutes of Energy and the Environment is focused on transforming data into knowledge, which is then used to make positive impacts in our communities and across the world. EESL is one way that IEE hopes to support researchers at the University and beyond.”
EESL is comprised of six facilities:
-- Accelerator Mass Spectrometer Facility, providing high-precision radiocarbon dating;
-- Center for Quantitative Imaging (CQI), offering micro- and nano-x-ray tomography imaging and characterization of complex 3-D structures;
-- Laboratory for Isotopes and Metals in the Environment (LIME), providing measurements of isotopes and major and trace elemental compositions in a wide range of materials;
-- Water Quality Lab, offering a full range of analytical instruments for various water quality testing;
-- SEESL (Satellite EESL), two labs, offering a stopped flow spectrometer and a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer; and
-- DEESL (Deployable EESL), offering seven deployable pieces of field equipment
“EESL is not limited to Penn State researchers,” Mina said. “In fact, EESL supports researchers at other academic institutions, and it is available to industry professionals who need to utilize high-quality equipment and support personnel who can assist with testing.”
