The winner of the Keep PA Beautiful 2016 Great American Cleanup Of PA Video Contest is the Lake Frederick Homeowners Association from Millerstown, Perry County.
The contest was sponsored by the PA Waste Industry Association and the Department of Environmental Protection. The winner received a $200 cash prize.
The winning video showed the Lake Frederick ‘River Rats,’ who are members of the Lake Frederick Homeowners Association, coming together as a community to remove floating debris as well as other trash that makes its way to the islands via the Susquehanna River.
“The Cleanup of Lake Frederick is very important to those who love the islands on the Susquehanna River. Shoreline cleanup is a continuous effort and one we are taking seriously,” said Michele Comp from the Lake Frederick Homeowners Association. “This was our first organized cleanup and islanders are already begging to do it again. We are planning to use the $200 for large appliance removal.”
The two runners up in the contest were the Saint Luke School in Erie, Erie County, and Everett Middle School in Everett, Bedford County. The schools each received a cash prize of $100.
Students of Saint Luke submitted an educational recycling video and pledged to do their part to keep Pennsylvania beautiful.
The students of Everett Middle School also produced an educational video emphasizing recycling and “saving the world one piece of paper at a time.”
Both schools also participate in the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Litter Free School Zone Program.
“Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful would like to congratulate the winners and thank all those who participated in the 2016 Great American Cleanup of PA Video Contest, making it a huge success. The contest generated a lot of excitement and friendly competition among participants,” said Shannon Reiter, President of Keep PA Beautiful. “These videos had close to 10,000 views, helping to drive home the message that we can all do our part to keep our communities clean and beautiful.”
Each year Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides an opportunity for community groups and individuals to showcase their local programs via the Great American Cleanup of PA Video Contest.
KPB received fourteen videos from diverse groups across the state showcasing programs that were equally diverse. Winners were chosen according to who received the most likes on Facebook during the voting period.
The three winning videos can be found on the KPB YouTube page. All video entries can be viewed on the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Facebook page as well as past winners.
