Mercer County’s Hugh Clark has been selected as the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers’ recipient of the 2015 National Volunteer Award for creating and maintaining the Upper Shenango River Water Trail, an innovative partnership that significantly increased the value of the local recreation and environmental stewardship effort.
The Water Trail was developed over an eight-year period, requiring coordination by Clark with 35 agencies and groups, 80 adjacent landowners, countless public meetings, and over $200,000 in private and matching state and local government grants.
Stretching 23 miles, the Water Trail is managed by the nonprofit organization, Shenango River Watchers, with support from a multitude of volunteers and numerous partners. River Watchers is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.
Shenango River Watchers are hosting a Family Cleanup Day on April 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. starting at the Clark Boat and Recreation Area. You can RSVP for this event by calling 724-342-5453 or sending email to: info@shenangoriverwatchers.org.
