The Department of Environmental Protection will host a public hearing at 5:00 p.m. on April 14 to outline a plan to remove hazardous substances and cap a portion of the Kuhn’s Landfill (site) located in Darlington Township, Beaver County.
The public hearing details actions DEP has taken to date, the actions it proposes to take, and gives residents an opportunity to comment.
The hearing will be held at the Darlington Township Municipal Building, located at 3590 Darlington Road, Darlington, PA.
The Kuhn’s Landfill site was used for the disposal of municipal and industrial waste between 1964 and 1980, when DEP ordered that it be closed. DEP’s investigation and sampling of the site revealed a gel-type industrial waste mixed with the municipal waste and hazardous substances above media specific concentrations under the Land Recycling and Environmental Remediation Standards Act.
DEP developed three alternative plans to remediate the site, before choosing a plan that would cap contaminated areas with soil and remove the gel-type waste. The project will be completed under the authority of the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act, a 1988 law that authorizes the agency to perform cleanups of hazardous waste sites and recover costs from responsible parties.
Members of the public may present testimony at the hearing. Those wishing to make comments should register, in writing, with Community Relations Coordinator John Poister, in care of DEP’s Southwestern Regional Office, 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or by phone at 412-442-4203 before noon on the day of the hearing. There will also be an opportunity to register at the hearing.
Those unable to attend the hearing can submit written comments to Edward Litwin, Project Manager at the above address. The public comment period for this cleanup plan will close on May 21.
