Throughout the spring, summer and fall, the Pennsylvania Resources Council will hold collection events in Allegheny, Beaver, Cambria and Washington counties to so residents can properly dispose of household chemical products known as household hazardous waste.
These include cleaners, paints, stains and varnishes, batteries, motor oil, pesticides and other products containing potentially hazardous chemicals.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an average home can easily accumulate 100 pounds of these products.
The first PRC drive-thru household chemical collection of 2015 will take place on Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Park Swimming Pool parking lot in Allegheny County. The cost to safely dispose of materials at all collections will be $3/gallon, cash only.
The complete schedule of 2015 PRC household chemical collection events include:
-- May 2 – Allegheny County (North Park)
-- May 16 – Cambria County (Concurrent Technologies Corporation)
-- July 18 – Washington County (Washington Mall)
-- August 15 – Allegheny County (Boyce Park)
-- September 12 – Allegheny County (South Park)
-- October 10 – Beaver County (Bradys Run Park)
The 2015 household chemical collection campaign is a project of the Pennsylvania Resources Council in conjunction with The Heinz Endowments, UPMC, Colcom Foundation, AAA East Central, Pennsylvania American Water, LANXESS, PA Department of Environmental Protection, NOVA Chemicals, Allegheny County Health Department, Beaver County, Cambria County, Washington County and NewsRadio 1020 KDKA.
Since 2003, event organizers have collected and safely disposed of more than 4 million pounds of chemicals from 40,000+ households during 70+ drive-thru collections held in nine counties. A certified contractor processes the hazardous wastes for proper disposal, and materials may be recycled, incinerated or safely buried in special landfills.
