Poll: Voters Support Drilling Tax, Oppose Education Cuts

A new poll by Franklin & Marshall College shows:
-- 62 percent of Pennsylvanians support the imposition of a severance tax on natural gas production;

-- 64 percent support selling state-owned liquor stores;

-- 72 percent favor taxing smokeless tobacco and cigars;

-- 19 percent favor reducing state funding for local school districts, 78 percent oppose reductions;

-- 28 percent favor 50 percent cuts in higher education funding, 67 percent are opposed;

-- 27 percent favor increasing the personal income tax, 68 percent oppose;

-- 36 percent favor increasing the Sales Tax, 60 percent oppose;

-- 35 percent favor placing more tolls on major highways, 60 percent oppose;

-- 37 percent favor increasing business taxes, 56 percent oppose;

-- 52 percent favor expanding the Sales Tax to include more goods, 45 percent oppose;

-- 43 percent favor reducing prison funding, 46 percent oppose;

-- 26 percent favor reducing Medicaid funding, 70 percent oppose;

-- 60 percent favor reducing the number of state employees, 35 percent oppose; and

-- 45 percent favor cutting public employee pay and benefits, 47 percent oppose.
