Independent Fiscal Office: Quarterly PA Natural Gas Production Up 5.1% From Last Year; Natural Gas Price Up 51.4%

On December 3, the
Independent Fiscal Office reported natural gas production in Pennsylvania from shale gas wells increased 5.1% in the third quarter over the third quarter a year ago and the number of new wells drilled in the quarter-- 53-- increased 84.1% over a year ago.

The IFO said "the increase in drilling is likely related to strong year-to-date spot prices" which increased 51.4% from the prior year.

The price of natural gas went from $1.44 per million Btus in the third quarter last year to $2.18 in the third quarter this year.

Pennsylvania production went from 1,841 billion cubic feet in the third quarter of last year to 1,934 billion cubic feet in the third quarter this year.

“This would be the strongest increase in annual production since calendar year (CY) 2021 (6.9%) if it holds for the rest of the year.”

However, production since the first quarter in 2025 declined slightly from 1,943 billion cubic feet to 1,934 billion cubic feet in the third quarter of this year.
