Allegheny Conference Of Community Development: A Major Win - Mainspring Energy Receives DOE Grant For Linear Generator Sustainable Energy Manufacturing Facility

On October 22, the
Allegheny Conference on Community Development issued this statement on the award of an $87 million US DOE grant to Mainspring Energy, an emerging linear generator manufacturer.

Mainspring Energy also announced the creation of a manufacturing facility in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania – to be the first high-volume linear generator manufacturing operation in the U.S. and bringing 600 jobs at the new facility to the Pittsburgh region.

For our region, this is a significant win – one made possible by the rallying of 120-plus partners, including those from the federal, state and county governments.

Together, we were able to present the strongest value proposition which secured this job-creating investment.

Below is a statement from the Allegheny Conference in reaction to this news and congratulating Mainspring on this milestone.

“Girded by a legacy in energy production and expertise in manufacturing – which is complemented by a passion and drive for innovation – the Pittsburgh region could not be better positioned to be a partner in delivering novel and sustainable solutions to meet the power needs of a world where energy transition is a priority. That’s why we – along with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Allegheny County and many other partners who were behind this attraction project – are thrilled to welcome Mainspring Energy to our region,” said Stefani Pashman, chief executive officer at the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, a public-private partnership organization working for 80 years to continuously improve the Pittsburgh region’s economic outlook and quality of life.

“Considering the plans to invest in excess of $175 million dollars to establish a cleantech-focused manufacturing operation in southwestern Pennsylvania, we acknowledge the significant commitment being made by both Mainspring Energy and the DOE, and the subsequent opportunities that will result.

“This is a win for our region, and we couldn’t be prouder of our role – along many other partners and stakeholders – in helping to advance what’s next in our nation’s energy transition.

“We congratulate Mainspring Energy on its grant award and recognize their commitment to creating jobs and economic opportunity in southwestern Pennsylvania.”

Mainspring Energy

Mainspring Energy said the DOE grant will support the expansion of Mainspring's U.S. clean-tech manufacturing in Allegheny County.

The state-of-the-art facility will produce the company's innovative, low-emissions Linear Generators with a capacity of up to 1,000 Linear Generators annually - the power equivalent to meet the electricity needs of up to a quarter of a million U.S. homes.

Linear generators represent an advanced new category of power generation. They use a flameless reaction with near-zero NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions using any gaseous fuel. The product can switch from one fuel to another seamlessly without hardware changes.

Designed to support utilities, data centers, microgrids, commercial and industrial use, and more, Mainspring Linear Generators are a critical component of the broader effort to transition to a carbon-pollution-free electricity sector by 2035.

The new, nearly 300,000 sq ft facility will be built adjacent to the Pittsburgh International Airport in Findlay Township.

The construction of the building is expected to create nearly 300 jobs, and once operating the facility will employ more than 600 women and men.

As part of its community benefits plan, Mainspring is committed to recruiting at least 20% of its new employees from underrepresented communities, and will offer at least 25% of non-production contracting opportunities to minority or underrepresented-population owned businesses.

The company also will support more than 20 apprentices.

The total investment in Southwestern PA, including building and equipment, will exceed $175 million.

The facility, located near Pittsburgh in a coal-affected region, will employ people in metalwork, machining, and production. Mainspring expects to break ground in 2025.
