Delaware River Basin Commission Meets Dec. 7 On Shale Gas Fracking Wastewater Regulations

On November 22, the
Delaware River Basin Commission announced it will meet on December 7 to consider special regulations covering the import and export of water from the basin and discharges of wastewater from high volume hydrofracking [shale gas drilling] activities.

DRBC published proposed shale gas drilling wastewater regulations in October 2021 for public comment and held several hearings on the proposal.

The proposed regulations prohibit the discharge of wastewater from high volume fracking operations in the watershed and set criteria for the import and export of wastewater, although in both cases the practice is discouraged.  Read more here.

Environmental groups have been encouraging the Commission to adopt a total ban on the import and export of wastewater.

A final version of the regulations for consideration by the Commission was not posted on the meeting webpage.
