Water Science Institute Hosts May 17 Dam Removal Forum At SRBC’s Harrisburg Conference Center

The Water Science Institute is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Dam Removal Forum to be held May 17 at the Susquehanna River Basin Commission’s Harrisburg Conference Center at 4423 North Front St., Harrisburg from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. 

Due to the nature of the event, remote participation will not be possible, and registration is required.  The proceedings of the Forum will be posted online at a later date.   

The Forum will bring together stakeholders engaged in removing, regulating, monitoring, and funding dam projects to discuss their professional responsibilities and promote a wider understanding of current dam practices, policies, and objectives.  

The Forum’s primary focus is the role of Pennsylvania practitioners in dam removal and examine how the Commonwealth’s approach promotes local and Chesapeake Bay water quality goals.  

To support these objectives, representatives of local, state, and national organizations will provide their expertise to develop sustainable, cost-effective removal strategies that promote multi-layered environmental benefits.

Presenters and participants will examine 5 interrelated areas: The State of Dam Removal Practice; Monitoring and Outcomes; Stakeholder Roundtable; Funding Sources and Incentives for Dam Removal, and; Policy and Practice Next Steps that explore challenges and opportunities for successful dam removal projects.  

Participating organizations include American Rivers, The Department of Environmental Protection, Franklin and Marshall College, Water Science Institute, Susquehanna River Basin Commission, Pennsylvania National Resource Conservation Service and GreenVest, LLC.

The Dam Removal Forum is supported by funding to the Water Science Institute from the Department of Environmental Protection’s Growing Greener program and the cooperation of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission.
