Two dozen people from Range Resources, the Washington County Conservation District, Washington & Jefferson College, and Independence Conservancy teamed up on the sunny morning of May 22 to tackle a chronic illegal dumping problem in the Harmon Creek Watershed.
Eager volunteers filled a 30-yard roll-off in less than thirty minutes at the old Bertha Mine dump in Smith Township, Washington County.
Tires, toys, mattresses and household trash were strewn along Dinsmore Road within yards of the Panhandle Trail.
"It looks like a whole furniture store here in the bushes," said one volunteer wrestling a moldy sofa.
Smith Township Supervisor Tom Schilinsky was pleasantly surprised and grateful to encounter so many volunteers hard at work on the roadside. The whole team had fun making a big impact in a short time, and will be back again - with more roll-offs!
