The Governor’s Youth Council for Hunting, Fishing, and Conservation held its inaugural meeting on March 25-26 at the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association in Palmyra, Lebanon County.
The 16 members of the youth council were appointed by Gov. Wolf, and are from across the Commonwealth.
Engaging youth in outdoor recreation and conservation, and listing issues affecting Pennsylvania’s hunting and fishing heritage and natural resources were main topics of discussion.
The council listed many issues of concern including: Chronic wasting disease; Insufficient funding of state conservation agencies; Climate change; Sunday hunting; Invasive species; Endangered species; and Promotion of outdoor recreation opportunities in urban areas.
The next step is to prioritize the issues and develop action plans.
Education, work, and fun are to be incorporated into every youth council meeting, and the “fun” component of this meeting was a trap shoot hosted by the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association.
The Council thanks the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association members, trap crew, and President Skip Klinger for hosting the two-day event. The next meeting will take place in August.
