DEP: Cleanup Of The Sharon Steel Corp Farrell Works Disposal Area Superfund Site Is Now Complete In Mercer County

The Department of Environmental Protection published notice in the October 3 PA Bulletin announcing an administrative order has been issued related to the
Sharon Steel Corp Farrell Works Disposal Area Superfund Site saying the cleanup remedy for the site in Hermitage and Farrell, Mercer County is now complete.  (PA Bulletin, page 6559)

The 330 acre site began operations in 1900 and made a variety of steel products until it ceased operation in 1992.

During operations, plant operators transported and disposed of manufacturing process slag, various steel-making byproducts, wastes, and Basic Oxygen Furnace sludge at the Site.

The site was added to the federal Superfund Priorities List in 1998.

In 2006, a plan for making the site safe was developed and implemented.

The order DEP issued prohibits the disturbance of the Selected Remedy, use of groundwater, and residential use.

Any person aggrieved by this decision has 30 days from this notice to file an appeal with the Environmental Hearing Board.

Read the entire PA Bulletin notice for more information.  (PA Bulletin, page 6559)

The Order is available for review at the DEP’s Northwest Regional Office at 230 Chestnut Street, Meadville by calling 814-332-6945.
