A Hot Weather Alert is a routine procedure PJM issues ahead of forecasted hot weather and/or high humidity to prepare transmission and generation personnel and facilities for expected increases in electricity demand, or load.
This procedure does not require any action from customers.
Temperatures are expected to reach and exceed 90 degrees over the early part of the week, driving increased electricity demand.
As of May 14, the forecast peak load on May 18 will be 129,308 MW and on May 19 128,886 MW.
PJM’s all-time record summer peak load was recorded in 2006 at 165,563 MW.
During an early season heat wave last year, PJM’s summer peak reached peaks of approximately 161,300 MW on June 23 and 160,900 MW on June 24.
PJM expects energy demand, or load, to peak at approximately 156,400 MW this summer.
PJM has approximately 180,200 MW of generation capacity to serve demand, as well as approximately 7,800 MW of contracted demand response.
PJM also issued a Maintenance Outage Recall on May 14 ahead of next week’s forecasted hot weather. The recall requests for all maintenance outages to be returned to service by May 18 to increase the amount of generation available to meet customer demand.
