As America approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, Pennsylvania stands at the heart of the celebration.
Our Commonwealth is where the nation’s story began and where it continues to unfold.
For more than a century, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has safeguarded the parks, forests, and historic landscapes that shaped that story.
This milestone year, DCNR is proud to join America250PA, a statewide effort engaging all 67 counties to make the commemoration E.P.I.C. by Educating, Preserving, Innovating, and Celebrating Pennsylvania’s rich history, culture, and future.
How DCNR is Celebrating
DCNR is creating opportunities for every Pennsylvanian and visitor to connect with the places that shaped our nation. In 2025, we joined America250PA’s signature programs, including:
-- Road to 2026: Encouraging visits to Pennsylvania’s state parks, forests, and historic sites.
-- Liberty Trees: Planting commemorative trees in all 67 counties, eight of which were planted in state parks.
-- Keystone Classroom Initiative: Bringing Pennsylvania’s story to classrooms and youth programs across the Commonwealth.
In 2026, DCNR will offer events and programs across Pennsylvania’s public lands that bring the Commonwealth’s history to life.
From First Day Hikes and commemorative tree plantings to special programs at Point State Park and Washington Crossing Historic Park, the celebration will reach every corner of the state.
Visitors can explore new interpretive features, including ADA accessible waysides and inclusive storytelling, and take part in the America 250 Geo‑Trail, a year‑long geocaching adventure across 20 state parks.
Each park will feature a special America’s 250th cache that highlights a historic moment, technological innovation, or story connected to Pennsylvania’s public lands.
Additional highlights include geology tours, old‑growth forest experiences, projects that share untold stories of Black soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War and formerly enslaved people, and new destinations such as Laurel Caverns, Pennsylvania’s newest and first underground state park
Finding Events
To make it easy to join the celebration, DCNR has added an America250PA tab to our Calendar of Events, where you can find activities tagged for the anniversary year and plan your visit to parks and forests across the state.
These initiatives ensure that America’s 250th anniversary is not just a celebration of history, but a commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and the future of Pennsylvania’s public lands.
Historic Parks to Explore
Pennsylvania’s public lands are living history. Here are 10 must-visit sites where America’s story comes alive:
-- Washington Crossing Historic Park: Where George Washington crossed the Delaware on December 25, 1776 — a pivotal strategic victory in the American Revolution.
-- Point State Park: Located at the historic Forks of the Ohio in Pittsburgh — site of Fort Duquesne, Fort Pitt, and strategic military conflict in the French and Indian War, influencing the future U.S. frontier. These forts were crucial in 18th-century colonial and early national defense.
-- Delaware Canal State Park: Preserves the 60-mile Delaware Canal, a critical 19th-century transportation and commercial waterway that fueled early American industry and westward movement. It’s the only intact towpath canal from that era.
-- Pine Grove Furnace State Park: Site of the historic Pine Grove Furnace iron works (est. 1764) — part of early American industrial development. Historic structures include the ironmaster’s mansion, gristmill, and workers’ residences.
-- Caledonia State Park: Once the site of Thaddeus Stevens’ Caledonia Iron Works, the park reflects his abolitionist work and its ties to local Underground Railroad activity. It was deliberately destroyed by Confederate forces during the Gettysburg Campaign. Today, it is recognized as a Path of Freedom site honoring the fight for equality and the struggle for freedom in the Civil War era.
-- Ridley Creek State Park: Features the Colonial Pennsylvania Farmstead, interpreting life from 1720–1820, along with historic mill complexes. Portions are listed on the National Register of Historic Places
-- Buchanan’s Birthplace State Park: Memorializes the birthplace of James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States.
-- Oil Creek State Park: Preserves the region central to the world’s first commercial oil well (1859), marking the birth of the petroleum industry.
-- Lehigh Gorge State Park: Contains remnants of the Upper Grand Section of the Lehigh Canal, part of Pennsylvania’s 19th-century canal and industrial transportation network. Canal ruins and waysides interpret early commerce and settlement patterns.
-- McConnells Mill State Park: Preserves a rare, intact example of 19th-century rural industrial life alongside one of Pennsylvania’s most dramatic natural gorges.
-- Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center: Preserves a nationally important center of early American arms manufacturing, where the Henry family produced long rifles from the mid-18th through 19th centuries for the French and Indian War, American Revolution, War of 1812, and frontier expansion.
Milestones Worth Celebrating
2026 also marks key anniversaries in Pennsylvania’s conservation legacy:
-- 190 years of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey
-- 131 years of forestry stewardship
-- 55 years of constitutional environmental rights
-- 133 years since Pennsylvania’s first state park at Valley Forge
-- 120 years since Mont Alto State Park was established
