Master Watershed Stewards In York Introduce Urban Youth To Fishing

By Jodi Sulpizio,
York County Master Watershed Stewards Coordinator

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon this fall, youth anglers of all ages and backgrounds enjoyed the camaraderie, education, and even a little competition at the Fifth Annual Youth and Family Fishing and Conservation Day held at Kiwanis Lake in York, Pennsylvania.

The Master Watershed Stewards in York County partnered with the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association, Mid-Atlantic Youth Angler and Outdoor Partners, and Watershed Alliance of York to offer this outdoor conservation experience.

Fishing builds a direct connection between people and water.

The program's primary goals were to foster stewardship and promote recreation in and around waterways, mainly for underserved youth.

Approximately 90 youth, alongside about 150 adults, eagerly dropped their fishing lines into the lake in hopes of reeling in a prized catch.

Fishing rods and bait were provided to anglers, and volunteer mentors taught the youth and their parents/guardians the basics of fishing.

Largemouth bass, sunfish, and channel catfish were stocked in the lake. Many young anglers caught their very first fish, ranging from small, colorful bluegills to giant catfish over 20 inches long!

Master Watershed Stewards also led educational activities, including a build-a-stream activity, a close-up look at macroinvertebrates, and a fishing activity that promoted awareness of aquatic invasive species.

Four youth anglers went home with prizes in the following categories: first fish, most fish, largest fish, and smallest fish caught.

Educating and introducing urban youth to fishing, a sport they may have yet to experience, leads to a greater appreciation for water resources and wildlife.

With continued education and hands-on experiences like this, today's youth will practice better stewardship in the future!

The contagious enthusiasm and long-lasting memories made during this event were priceless! It was a rewarding experience for everyone!

Thank you to the York County Community Foundation's Codorus Watershed Endowment Fund for the grant funding that made this event possible.
