The grants awarded include--
-- Anthracite Scenic Trails Association, $2,630 for ASTA Map Brochure Project
The grant will fund design of a trail map for use in various publicity efforts, such as brochures, handouts, and publicity cards suitable for public use. Two maps will be developed for the Back Mountain Trail and the Black Diamond Trail, respectively.
-- Camp Freedom Inc., $8,256 for Camp Freedom River Access Feasibility Study
Funding will be used to evaluate the Camp Freedom property, between the O&W Trail and Lackawanna River for approximately two miles in Simpson, PA, to determine the feasibility of constructing up to five fishing/water access points that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards for accessibility.
-- County of Lackawanna, $5,384 for Merli-Sarnoski Park-Trail System Enhancement Project
The project includes targeted upgrades to trail signage, kiosk mapping, and the installation of a new training area to improve the safety and experiences of trail users at the Merli Sarnoski Park in Lackawanna County, PA.
-- County of Lackawanna, $5,000 for The Heritage Disc Golf Course at McDade Park
This construction project will create the first 9 holes of an 18-hole, destination disc golf course within McDade Park in Scranton. The course, including tee boxes and disc golf baskets, will be designed to meander through several habitats between the existing Coal Mine Tour and the Pool Complex. Each hole will also have heritage markers and educational information to further the dual goals of education through recreation within the County Park System.
-- Delaware Highlands Conservancy, $5,000 for 2024 Women and Their Woods Retreat
Women and Their Woods is an education program coordinated by Delaware Highlands Conservancy to create a network of landowners and natural resources professionals working together to connect with and care for private forest lands. The Conservancy is holding a Women and Their Woods retreat September 15th-18th at the Highlights Foundation in Milanville.
-- Lacawac Sanctuary Foundation, $6,525 for Educational Signage and Trail Upgrades at the Browning Beaver Meadow Sanctuary
Funding will be used to develop and create new interpretive educational trail signs; construct a welcome kiosk; upgrade existing trailhead signs; and increase parking at Lacawac’s Browning Beaver Meadow Sanctuary.
-- Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District, $10,000 for Northern Poconos Harmful Algal Bloom Education Trailer
The District will use mini-grant funds to design and produce a mobile “HAB Lab” trailer. The HAB Lab is both an active and passive educational display on Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Content and exhibits will educate the public on recognition, causes, and prevention of HABs; best practices regarding potential health impacts to humans and domestic animals; and potential economic impacts from the presence of HABs in the waters of northeastern Pennsylvania. It will be available to conservation organizations across the Northern Poconos Lake Region.
-- North Branch Land Trust, $5,300 for Water Quality and Wetland Defense: Access and Education in Wetland Sanctuary
The project will increase public access, provide educational information, conduct litter cleanup, and address invasive species at Hanover Crossing Marsh Sanctuary. The project will address the removal of invasive species and litter while continuing efforts in stormwater and pollution management and provide educational information in an installed kiosk informing visitors on updates to the Sanctuary, native and invasive species, Leave No Trace principles, and other relevant stewardship information.
-- Stewards of Twin Lakes, Inc., $5,495 for Twin Lakes Watershed Community Education and Pilot Remediation Program
The project will focus on two distinct, but related, efforts: (1) building community knowledge of nonpoint source stormwater runoff risks and their impact and contribution to that runoff via a series of educational efforts, and (2) identifying and mapping point source stormwater contributors and developing specific solutions via the implementation of two unique pilot demonstration projects of remediation.
-- Wayne County Community Foundation, $4,110 for 2024 Upper Delaware BioBlitz
The 2024 Upper Delaware BioBlitz will be held Friday, June 28th and Saturday, June 29th on the Highlights Foundation Retreat Center property in Boyd’s Mills, Wayne County, PA. Over 40 renowned scientists and amateur naturalists comprising eight teams will convene on an approximately 250-acre portion of the property that contains over a mile of the South Branch of Calkins Creek. For 24 hours the teams will collect, identify, and catalogue every living species visible to the naked eye and share their findings with families from the region during the public portion of the event on Saturday.
-- Wayne County Community Foundation, $7,300 for New River Park, Old Friends
The goal is to install three signs at the new Lackawaxen River access, Sycamore Point, in Honesdale, PA that will help residents and visitors learn about the industrial history that existed a century ago and to learn about and protect the wildlife that lives in and along the river edge.
The DCNR funding is provided through the Environmental Stewardship Fund administered by the Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.
The Pocono Forests and Waters Conservation Landscape Mini Grant Program is administered by PEC as a reimbursement funding program that provides grants from $2,000 to $10,000 for projects that support and advance the Conservation, Community, and Connections goals and objectives of the PFWCL.
Projects also must be located within the counties of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne.
