Months of extracurricular studying finally paid off with high scores, good memories, and a strong sense of accomplishment.
The Envirothon is the nation’s largest environmental education competition. Nearly every county in Pennsylvania hosts an Envirothon competition each year.
York County is unique in the scale of its Envirothon. While most counties host only a senior high Envirothon competition, York County begins in the 3rd grade and hosts four separate competitions for 3rd-4th grade, 5th-6th grade, middle school, and senior high.
The York County Envirothon program introduces students to environmental education at a young age and prepares them for the senior high Envirothon and careers in conservation.
The intensity of the competition increases as students advance through the grade levels. The highest scoring team at the senior high competition proceeds on to the Pennsylvania Envirothon with scholarship money on the line.
The winner of the Pennsylvania Envirothon competes in the International NCF Envirothon in New Brunswick, Canada on July 23-29.
This year, the York Home School Association “Glacial Guardians” was the highest scoring team at the York County Senior High Envirothon.
The “Glacial Guardians” represented York County in the Pennsylvania Envirothon on May 24, where they placed 7th out of 63 teams of Pennsylvania’s best and brightest Envirothon students.
At the county level, the Envirothon is coordinated by the York County Conservation District and sponsored by local businesses and organizations.
Sponsors of the 2023 York County Envirothon include York Ag Products, Aquatic Resource Restoration Company, York County Solid Waste Authority, PA American Water, Lee Fence and Outdoor, Covanta, Adams Electric Cooperative, Jefferson Sportsmen's Association, Kinsley Construction, Izaak Walton League York Chapter #67, Golf Enterprises, D.F.
