The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority collected over 73,000 pounds of household hazardous waste and enough fluorescent light tubes to span 4.5 miles at a special collection event on April 28-29.
904 vehicles brought hazardous chemicals to the annual free drop off event. Residents from all 35 of the county’s municipalities participated. We also had many travel in from surrounding counties.
Comments from residents were extremely positive and appreciated the quick and friendly service. They also valued staff standing out in the rain to greet them and were grateful for the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous items from their homes.
“The constant rain didn’t keep residents from attending our yearly event. Residents thanked us throughout the weekend for offering such a helpful service. We are happy to continue to offer this event as a means for proper disposal or recycling of harmful products,” said Joanne Shafer, the Authority’s Deputy Executive Director/Recycling Coordinator.
The event was co-sponsored by Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Agriculture. MXI of Langhorne, PA was the successful contractor.
If you missed this collection, look for information early next year. The Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority will be holding another Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event in the spring of 2024.
