The featured speaker will be Dr. Robert Howarth, the David R. Atkinson Professor of Ecology & Environmental Biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University. He is an Earth systems scientist, ecosystem biologist, and biogeochemist.
The discussion will center on his work culminating in the groundbreaking paper published in Energy Science & Engineering.
“Hydrogen is often viewed as an important energy carrier in a future decarbonized world. Currently, most hydrogen is produced by steam reforming of methane in natural gas (‘gray hydrogen’), with high carbon dioxide emissions. Increasingly, many propose using carbon capture and storage to reduce these emissions, producing so-called ‘blue hydrogen,’ frequently promoted as low emissions. We undertake the first effort in a peer-reviewed paper to examine the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of blue hydrogen accounting for emissions of both carbon dioxide and unburned fugitive methane.”
This event is the latest in a series of legislative tours and briefings organized by the coalition. All elected officials, regulators, staffers, members of the press, and members of the public are invited to attend.
