Susquehanna River Basin Commission Awards $100,000 In Grants For Groundwater Level Monitoring

On August 24, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission announced more than $100,000 in grants awarded for groundwater level monitoring projects. This is the second successful year for the program.

“We’re committed to ensuring reliable water supplies for residents throughout the basin,” said Andrew Dehoff, SRBC Executive Director. “In meeting that daily goal, we are just as committed to helping our approved projects track water levels in their supply wells to stay on top of any changing conditions.”

The Commission is tasked with approving groundwater withdrawals in the Susquehanna River Basin, and approved projects are required to monitor and report operational data. 

The grants will help 20 municipalities and businesses purchase and install equipment needed to track water levels in their production wells. 

Information collected aids in supporting a project during time of renewal of approvals, continued evaluation of groundwater conditions, and knowledge of the sustainability of water resources throughout the basin.

Grants may be used to upgrade equipment or for projects that are not currently collecting water level data from their well(s). The funding can be crucial in preventing equipment failures, achieving better accuracy, improving efficiency, and/or automating water level recordings.

Every applicant was awarded in this round with half of the projects receiving the maximum grant award of $7,500. Awardees include 15 public water suppliers, four corporations, and one country club. Six projects are located in New York state, while 14 are in Pennsylvania.

Ashland Area Municipal Water Authority - $7,500

Papetti’s Hygrade Egg Products, Inc. - $7,500

Tower City Borough Authority - $7,500

Lykens Borough Authority - $7,500

Borough of Duncannon - $5,000

East Cocalico Township Authority - $7,500

New Holland Borough Authority - $7,500

Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. - $2,500

Columbia Water Company, Marietta Division - $2,500

Strasburg Borough Authority - $4,257

Hanover Foods Corporation - $7,500
