Penn State Extension will host an April 1 webinar on a new citizen science tool called the First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH) from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Is your stream healthy? Would you like to explore it a little closer or monitor changes in your stream over time? Have you recently done something to improve your stream and now you want to measure the successful results?
The First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH) tool is a fun and easy way for individuals, families, volunteer groups, youth, and adults to explore a stream and share your findings with the scientific community!
Penn State Extension and the Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center developed the First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH) Protocol as a citizen science monitoring protocol to not only assesses habitat, but also provides the opportunity to record information on the organisms living in and around the stream to get a fuller picture of stream health.
One of the main benefits of performing visual assessments is that by scoring a stream numerically, it is easy to compare it to other similarly evaluated streams or to gauge changes over time.
Restoration projects can be prioritized and improvement or degradation over time can be illustrated in a measurable way.
For more information on this tool, visit the First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH) webpage.
