The PA Resources Council will hold its final Household Chemical Collection Event November 21 at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, 132 Pechin Road in Dunbar, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants must register in advance.
The event gives residents an opportunity to safely and cost effectively dispose of common chemicals such as cleaners, paints, stains and varnishes, batteries, motor oil and pesticides.
“This year PRC has introduced new procedures at its seven household chemical collection events including advance registration and a new fee structure to reduce the number of interactions occurring between event participants and staff to promote safety during the current COVID-19 outbreak,” according to PRC Interim Managing Director Sarah Alessio Shea. “All PRC staff members in attendance adhere to the most current safety protocols issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and local health authorities, which includes the wearing of face masks.”
PRC will incorporate safety measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic including the new fee structure and an advance registration system required by the Department of Environmental Protection.
A $20 fee will cover the cost of disposing up to 10 gallons/50 pounds of aerosol cans, automotive fluids, chemistry sets, gasoline and kerosene, household cleaners, mercury thermometers, paint products, pesticides/garden chemicals, photo chemicals and pool chemicals.
Oversized loads will be subject to additional charges at the discretion of on-site staff. Participants will also pay $12 per fire extinguisher and $15 per pound of liquid mercury.
Participants at this event must adhere to the following guidelines: 1) register online in advance 2) place all items in car truck or truck bed 3) wear a mask when speaking with on-site personnel 4) remain in vehicle at all times 5) bring exact change or check payable to PRC 6) visit PRC’s website for updates before attending the event.
Since launching household chemical collections in 2003, PRC and its partners have collected and safely disposed of more than 5 million pounds of chemicals from 50,000+ households in western Pennsylvania.
Thus far in 2020, PRC has arranged for the responsible disposal of 364,290 pounds of household chemicals.
The 2020 PRC household chemical collection campaign is sponsored by Allegheny County Health Department, Allegheny County Parks Department, Beaver County Commissioners, Cambria County Solid Waste Authority, Fayette County Commissioners, Fayette County Conservation District, Washington County, Colcom Foundation, LANXESS, NOVA Chemicals, PA Department of Environmental Protection, UPMC, Concurrent Technologies Corporation, Washington Wild Things, Washington County Family Entertainment, Pennsylvania American Water and NewsRadio 1020 KDKA.
