DEP Issues Code Orange Air Quality Action Day Warning For Nov. 5 In Allegheny County

The Department of Environmental Protection
forecasts a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day warning for particulate matter-- PM 2.5-- for Thursday, November 5 in the Liberty-Clairton Area of Allegheny County.

The Air Quality Action Day is based on DEP’s Thursday forecast: A strong temperature inversion expected in the morning, coupled with calm winds, will produce poor air quality in the code ORANGE range with respect to fine particulate matter, with the highest concentrations expected Thursday morning.

The daily average for PM 2.5 will still end up in the code ORANGE range, in spite of a breaking inversion late Thursday morning.

Further action days are possible over the next few days as high pressure building into the northeastern US will cause a stagnating pattern to continue, and these will be issued as warranted.

An air quality action day, which is determined based on the forecasted air quality index, means air pollutants are at unhealthy levels for vulnerable populations.

On these days, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities.

Residents and businesses within the Air Quality Action Day area are strongly encouraged to voluntarily help reduce air pollution by:

-- Conserving electricity by setting air conditioning to a higher temperature;

-- Combining errands to reduce vehicle trips;

-- Limiting engine idling; and

-- Refueling cars and trucks after dusk.

This forecast was issued in cooperation with the Southwest Pennsylvania Air Quality Partnership.
