The PA Parks and Forests Foundation held another in its series of Lunch & Learn programs October 15 about Pennsylvania Wildfires.
Steve Ziegler of DCNR Bureau of Forestry will discuss wildfires in Pennsylvania and learn about the cause and prevention of fires.
On average Pennsylvania had 686 wildfires each year between 2015 and 2019 and this year there was an unusually high number of fires in February-- 161-- compared to 11 in 2019. Read more here.
Volunteer Forest Fire Wardens have been engaged in forest fire protection work in Pennsylvania for more than 100 years.
Properly trained local forest fire wardens are appointed primarily to detect, extinguish, and investigate wildfires. Wardens actively promote fire prevention in their community. Read more here.
DCNR also has several programs to provide equipment and funding for local fire companies that fight wildfires. Read more here.
Pennsylvania’s wildfire fighters have also had a busy 2020 helping fight wildfires in other states.
Pennsylvania wildfire personnel are or have served in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Texas and Wyoming this fire season.
DCNR has also deployed two of its wildfire fighting engines along with its four person team as well as other individuals on specific assignments for a total of 166 personnel. Read more here.
