DEP’s Low-Level Radioactive Waste Advisory Committee is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting on October 2 and one of the items on the agenda is a status report on the closure of Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 and the license transfer of Three Mile Island Unit 2. (formal notice)
Unit 1 is the reactor that just closed because it could not compete with other forms of electric generation. It is being transitioned into storage for later decontamination. [Read more here.]
Unit 2 was damaged in the 1979 accident and a license transfer is under consideration by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to a firm to complete the cleanup of the Unit. [Read more here. Read more here.]
Also on the agenda is a status report on Low-Level Radioactive Waste Compacts, an update on commercial low-level radioactive waste facilities and a review of the Appalachian Compact low-level radioactive waste generation information.
