Brodhead Watershed Assn. Receives Grant To Install Green Stormwater Management Practices In Barrett Twp., Monroe County

On October 3, the Brodhead Watershed Association announced it has received a $53,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to install green stormwater practices in the Mountainhome area of Barrett Township in Monroe County.
The grant will be matched with another $35,000 in matching funds, including donations from the Weiler Family Foundation ($5,000) and Rotary Club of the Poconos ($300).
BWA and its project partners – Mountainhome Methodist Church, Barrett Township, and the Friendly Community Center – will install stormwater management infrastructure in Mountainhome to protect the quality of Mill Creek.
Mill Creek runs through the center of Mountainhome. Studies have shown that the stream has excellent water quality and supports native trout and other fish that need clean, cold water.
Projects will include pavers, rain barrels, rain gardens, swales and riparian buffers designed to filter runoff, preventing pollutants washed off roads and parking lots from reaching Mill Creek.
Local landscapers will install the projects, with volunteer assistance from local groups.
Community workshops are also planned to share ideas for green practices with home and business owners so they can install green projects on their own properties.
Edie Stevens, BWA board member, will manage the project with guidance from a steering committee made up of Barrett Township residents.
For information about the project, visit BWA’s Green Infrastructure Project webpage or send email to: info@brodheadwatershed.org or call 570-839-1120.
