On September 5, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced its 19th annual Green Power Leadership Awards, recognizing 17 Green Power Partners across the country, including Northampton Community College in Bethlehem.
Other Green Power Leadership Award winners include Bank of America, Equinix, Google, Intel, and Johnson & Johnson.
“The 2019 GPLA winners are leading innovators, demonstrating not only that American businesses are investing in renewable energy, but that doing so helps protect the environment and improve air quality,” said Anne Idsal, EPA Acting Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation.
The award winners are being recognized for their efforts in advancing the nation’s voluntary green power market.
From using enough green power to meet 100 percent of electricity needs to signing long-term contracts that enable new green power project development, these organizations are demonstrating leadership by furthering the case for accessible, affordable green power use.
Northampton Community College has been a Green Power Partner since 2014 and received a 2019 Excellence in Green Power award for:
-- Increasing their green power purchase by 82 percent in the past two years, to a total of 86 percent (as of June 2019 purchases have increased to 100 percent renewable), and one of the country’s largest community college consumers of green power.
-- Owning and operating an on-site green power from a solar array and wind turbine at their Monroe Campus, which together provide 40 percent of the campus’s electricity needs-- 600,000 kWh, and which NCC integrates into their curriculum, creating experiential learning experiences in building and erecting green power systems. The Monroe County campus now uses 100 percent renewable energy.
-- Communicating effectively with students, staff, alumni, local communities, state officials, and federal officials about the benefits of green power.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established the Green Power Partnership in 2001 to protect human health and the environment and to advance the American market for green power by increasing organizations’ voluntary green power use.
The program provides a framework that includes credible usage benchmarks, market information, technical assistance, and public recognition to companies and other organizations that use green power.
