PA Resources Council Fall Schedule Of 12 Backyard Composting, Recycling, Rain Barrel, Vermicomposting Workshops In Allegheny County

The PA Resources Council has released its fall schedule of 12 backyard composting, recycling, rain barrel and vermicomposting workshops in Allegheny County.

Backyard Composting
Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost. 
The workshops will be held--
-- September 10: 6:30 – 8 p.m., South Park Buffalo Inn 
-- September 12: 6:30 – 8 p.m., North Park Rose Barn
-- September 14: 10:30 – Noon, Lauri Ann West Community Center, O’Hara Township
-- September 21: 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Construction Junction, Point Breeze
-- October 9: 6:30 – 8 p.m., East End Food Co-op, Point Breeze
-- October 14: 7 – 8:30 p.m., Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park
-- October 23: 7 – 8:30 p.m., Ross Township Community Center
Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a FreeGarden EARTH compost bin, which features an 82-gallon capacity ideal for both urban and suburban settings. Cost: $70 per person ($75 per couple) and includes one composting bin.  Pre-registration is required.
Rain Barrel Workshop
Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape.  Learn about problems associated with stormwater runoff and techniques to reduce your contribution to watershed pollution.
The workshop will be held--
-- October 19: 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Construction Junction, Point Breeze
Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a FreeGarden RAIN 55-gallon easy-to-install rain barrel.  Cost: $80 per person ($85 per couple) and includes one rain barrel. Pre-registration is required.
Recycling Awareness
It’s time to talk “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse!”  
PRC’s Recycling Awareness Workshop shares answers to common questions surrounding recycling in southwestern Pennsylvania such as: Lids on? Lids off? Rinse? Wash? Labels on? Labels off? Which plastics are acceptable? What about a window? Broken plastic toys? Electronics? Tires? Plastic bags? Polystyrene? Appliances? Textiles? What materials are accepted curbside? What about hard-to-recycle items and household hazardous waste? Unwanted pharmaceuticals? Organic debris? 
The workshops will be held--
-- October 26: 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Lauri Ann West Community Center, O’Hara Township
-- November 9: 11 a.m. – Noon, Cooper-Siegel Community Library, Fox Chapel 
-- November 12: 6:30 – 8 p.m., East End Food Co-op, Point Breeze
Course fee includes instruction plus a 32-gallon blue recycling bin. Cost: $50 per person ($55 per couple) and includes one recycling bin.  Pre-registration is required.
Vermicomposting (Worms)
Try indoor composting with red wiggler worms!  Build a complete vermiculture system to take home at the end of the workshop.  Worms produce a product (castings) that is considered an especially good soil amendment and nutrient source.  Learn how to house, feed, harvest and care for worms that produce a natural, homemade fertilizer for your lawn and garden
The workshop will be held--
-- November 16: 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Construction Junction, Point Breeze
Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a complete, ready-to-use vermiculture system.  Cost: $70 per person ($75 per couple) and includes one compost box with worms. Pre-registration is required.
