On August 7 and 8, the Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center and Penn State Extension will offer a two-day training on a whole-farm perspective for conservation planning, with an emphasis on Manure Management plans and Agriculture Erosion and Sediment Control plans.
The training will include classroom and field experiences at the Penn State Southeast Research and Extension Center and a host dairy farm in the Chiques Creek Watershed, Lancaster County.
The workshop is designed for new conservation professionals as well as experienced agronomists and ag service providers interested in learning about conservation planning.
Topics of the workshop will include: communicating with and developing the trust of farmers; livestock housing and feeding; manure handling and storage systems; manure and fertilizer application equipment; determining appropriate nutrient application rates; managing water flow; controlling erosion; and streamside conservation practices such as riparian buffers.
During the training, information about these topics will be combined to develop an example Manure Management Plan and Agriculture Erosion and Sediment Control Plan for the host farm.
Other partners involved in training include NRCS-PA, the Lancaster County Conservation District, State Conservation Commission, DEP, and Red Barn Consulting.
The training is part of the “Chiques Creek Reenvisioned” project being led by the AEC and funded by a Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Additional funding is provided by Penn State University’s Strategic Plan Seed Grant program.
