Every year, dozens of people are injured or killed at active and abandoned mine sites in Pennsylvania and the United States.
On July 27, a 49-year old man died in a nearly 200 foot jump into a quarry in Upper Darby Township, Northampton County. He was illegally trespassing on private property.
DEP reports there were no fatalities in 2017 or 2018, but one person died while trespassing and swimming in an abandoned Pennsylvania quarry in 2016 and two people died in 2015.
Every single one of these deaths could have been avoided.
DEP and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration have an information program called Stay Out, Stay Alive to give presentations to schools or community groups about the issue.
If you want to schedule a presentation, call DEP's Bureau of Mine Safety New Stanton Office at 724-925-5500 or the Pottsville Office 570-621-3139.
More information and educational materials for kids and adults are available at DEP's Stay Out, Stay Alive webpage.
