On June 24, members of the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy’s Youth Conservation Corps began their five-day Perki-Bay Canoeing Expedition. The team, consisting of 22 students and leaders launched into the Perkiomen Creek at the Conservancy’s headquarters near Schwenksville, Montgomery County.
The group will travel for five days: first down the Perkiomen Creek to Oaks, PA, then out the Schuylkill River through the heart of Philadelphia, and lastly down a portion of the Delaware River to Fort Mifflin.
The Expedition gives high school students who are members of the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy's Youth Conservation Corps a one of a kind learning experience.
The group carries all of their own equipment and will camp their way down the 50-mile route. In effect, the trip models a wilderness-style expedition but takes place in the heart of the urban east.
The goal of the Expedition is to raise awareness for water quality in the Perkiomen Creek and its river systems downstream. To this end, the students will be conducting water quality assessments at many points along the way.
Students are able to participate in the Expedition without any cost to them. The expedition is made possible through the support of generous individual and corporate donors.
