PA Sea Grant Looking For PA Educators To Participate In Great Lakes Educator Program

The Center for Great Lakes Literacy Educator Program for formal and informal educators of students in grades 4-12 is looking for more Pennsylvania teachers to participate in the program.  The deadline to apply is May 15.
This year the program will have a dual focus: Resilience: Disease, Food and Weather and  Engaging your students in Citizen Science
The topic of ‘resilience’ allows teachers and students to address climate change-related topics in manageable chunks that are directly applicable to them and where they live. We will discuss local examples for each of these topics, as well as the science behind them.
Citizen science engages citizens in data gathering that informs local, regional, national or international efforts to understand the natural world.
The Program will introduce educators to a wide variety of resources that they can use in their formal or informal learning situation as well as demonstrate easy projects teachers can do with students such as building a ‘bee hotel’ to increase habitat for pollinators.
A June 26 workshop will focus on lab and field experiences.
An October 19 workshop will include both field experiences and classroom resources.
Both workshops will be hands-on. Educators will leave these workshops with the confidence to discuss the topics and perform the activities we cover with their students. Attendance at both workshops is required.
Participation in the International Coastal Cleanup is required along with the development of a second student-driven stewardship project.
Participation in this yearlong project comes with $400 in travel/stipend; $400 in support for student field and lab activities; $150 in project supplies for your students’ second stewardship project; and an opportunity to apply for a $250 mini-research grant.
