The Cameron County Chamber Of Commerce will again host Hike Cameron County on June 1 to celebrate National Trails Day.
This year the focus will be Square Timber Trail in the Brooks Run Division in Elk State Forest.
The trail named for the hollow is 7.4 miles long starting at Stillhouse Road and continuing through the Bucktail Natural Area. The trail got its name because pine timber was cut, hewed square and placed on railroad cars.
While the trail crosses steep hillsides both novice and experience hikers are welcome. Novices will complete one half of the trail, while experienced hikers will complete the entire section.
The event is free, and participants are urged to dress appropriately and bring water and snacks since the time to complete the entire trail is estimated at 5 hours. Participants will carpool from the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office, 34 East Fourth Street in Emporium at 8:30 a.m. Questions should be directed to 814-486-4314.
