On April 29, the Westmoreland Conservation District announced Yough Senior High School took first place in the Envirothon – an academic competition in which students test their knowledge of the natural world.
The team included students Drake Croushure, Mason Brunson, Alex Kohuth, Tyler Trayter, Cameron Hopkin and team advisor, Greg King.
They bested a number of teams from 10 Westmoreland County high schools in their knowledge of forestry, soil and land use, aquatic ecology, wildlife, and this year’s current environmental issue: agriculture and the environment – knowledge and technology to feed the world.
Some high schools had more than one student team competing.
Team 1 from Norwin High School netted second place with students Riley Wian, Ethan Gogal, Thomas Kratzenber, Kelsie Patton, Jordan Bernard and team advisor Joyce Muchoney.
Greater Latrobe Senior High School Team 1 placed third with students Marshall Kalning, Joey Costello, Landen Valbrani, Ryan Gorsich, Jake Krinock and team advisor Macy Logan.
The first-place Yough Senior High School will go on to compete in the state competition at the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown on May 21 and 22.
The Westmoreland County Envirothon is sponsored by Apex Energy, LLC; Smithfield; and the Pennsylvania Envirothon, Inc.
More information on the statewide competition is available on the Pennsylvania Envirothon website.
