On April 25, the Department of Environmental Protection announced it has approved IESI Blue Ridge Landfill’s permit application to expand its facility in Greene Township, Franklin County.
The vertical and lateral expansion of the disposal area provides an additional 13.8 million cubic yards of landfill disposal capacity, which would provide an additional 12 years of life to the currently permitted landfill.
The permit modification does not change the landfill’s average daily or maximum daily volumes. The current Blue Ridge permit is set to expire in May 2020.
IESI Blue Ridge filed the original expansion application in December 2016. DEP held a public meeting in May 2017 to answer questions about the permit application.
The application process included a review of the environmental assessment (EA), which determined the benefits of the expansion outweighed the harms. DEP approved the EA in June 2018.
A copy of IESI’s permit can be reviewed at DEP’s Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Those wishing to review the permit between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. are asked to call 717-705-4732 to make an appointment.
Questions should be directed to John Repetz, DEP Southcentral Regional Office, 717-705-4904 or send email to: jrepetz@pa.gov.
