PA Organization For Watersheds & Rivers, DCNR Accepting Nominations For 2018 River Of The Year

The PA Organization for Watersheds and Rivers and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are now accepting nominations for the 2018 River of the Year from nonprofit organizations.  The deadline for nominations is November 6.
“Thankfully, Pennsylvania residents hold their state’s natural resources in the highest regard, but our wealth of waterways always has held a very special place in their hearts,” said Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “Nowhere is this appreciation more evident than in the annual support of this selection process in which one river or stream will claim ‘River of the Year’ honors. When the public rallies around them, all nominated waterways emerge true winners.”
For the past twenty years, DCNR has annually recognized one river as the River of the Year. This recognition is done to raise awareness of the important recreational, ecological, and historical resources associated with the state’s rivers and streams.
The River of the Year is celebrated throughout the year. Events have included paddling trips, a speaker series, clean up days, photography contests, and more. Partnerships of community groups organize the events including a Sojourn paddling trip.
In addition, POWR coordinates the production and distribution of a free poster celebrating the river.
POWR administers the River of the Year program and also helps organize and support local watershed associations, as well as the groups who lead a dozen sojourns on rivers around the state each year.
All Pennsylvania Rivers are eligible for nomination, except for winning rivers since 2013.
Selected nominees for the 2018 will be voted on by the public and the winner becomes the River of the Year.
