The PA Horticultural Society has selected the Blue Ribbon winners and the Gardens of Distinction in the “2017 PHS Gardening and Greening Contest.”
This year, a record-breaking 387 gardens from throughout the tri-state region were entered in the competition.
The participants were a diverse group of gardeners, including inmates at Jones Farm, part of the New Jersey Department of Corrections in West Trenton, and the Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network urban farm in Erie, Pa.
Gardeners of all ages included students at Bartram High School in Southwest Philadelphia, Thomas M Peirce Elementary in North Philadelphia, and the Overbrook School for the Blind, as well as seniors living at the Foulkeways at Gwynedd in Gwynedd, Pa.
Geographically, entries came from as far as Peach Bottom, Pa., Dover, Del., and Atlantic Highlands, N.J.
The entries include colorful flower gardens, bountiful vegetable and community gardens, combination gardens, children’s gardens, container gardens, public spaces including parks, garden blocks, and urban farms.
“We had an amazing range of gardens created by talented individuals and dedicated community groups in this year’s competition,” PHS President Matt Rader said. “PHS takes great pleasure in recognizing the accomplishments of these gardeners. We hope they inspire their neighbors to enter next year’s Gardening and Greening Contest, one of the many ways PHS connects people with horticulture and engages them in the joys of gardening.”

More than 60 panels of judges visited 387 gardens throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware to view the beautiful, well-designed spaces filled with a variety of color and texture.
Judges were looking at the design and total visual effect of the gardens, and awarded extra points for creativity and sustainable practices. Gardens were also judged on maintenance and horticultural practices, as well as the suitability of plantings.
A reception for this year’s winners will be held at PHS headquarters, 100 N. 20th Street in Philadelphia, on November 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.
All winners will receive a garden sign and two tickets to the 2018 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, “Wonders of Water,” March 3 to 11, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
