The Department of Environmental Protection Friday announced it has issued a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit amendment to Shell Chemical Appalachia for the proposed petrochemical complex in Beaver County.
The permit allows for discharges of treated wastewater and stormwater into the Ohio River, Poorhouse Run, and Rag Run from Shell’s proposed facility.
DEP held a public comment period and several public hearings seeking input on the NPDES permit modification and the Air Quality Plan Approval for the facility. Comments from the public were accepted at the public hearings and during public comment periods in October and December 2016.
The final modified Air Quality Plan was approved December 30, 2016.
A copy of the amended NPDES permit and fact sheet addendum, which includes DEP’s responses to the public comments, can be viewed at DEP’s Southwest Regional Office at 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or DEP’s Southwest Regional Office Community Information webpage.
Questions should be directed to Lauren Fraley, DEP Southwest Regional Office, 312-442-4203 or send email to: lfraley@pa.gov.
