The Eastern PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation is organizing volunteers to cleanup Centralia, Columbia County starting at 9:00 a.m. in the Borough Hall.
The residents of Centralia voted to relocate out of town in 1983 due to an underground mine fire. Since then, the abandoned streets have made Centralia a hotspot for illegal dumping.
Dumpsters for the cleanup are being provided by Mostik Brothers Disposal of Mount Carmel rent-free, but donations are being accepted at www.givegab.com to pay for the cost of disposing of the waste collected.
Lunch is being supplied to volunteers by Sexy Pig BBQ of Frackville.
For more information, call EPCAMR at 570-371-3522. More information the history of Centralia and the mine fire is available at the Centralia PA website.
