The Chester Ridley Crum Watersheds Association’s 19th Annual CRC Streams Cleanup in Chester and Delaware counties on April 30 featured a record-setting crowd of 693 volunteers, the most ever in the event’s history.
The volunteers met at thirty sites throughout the region and collected nearly 15,000 pounds of trash.
This year’s total brings the cumulative amount of trash removed during the 19 cleanups to nearly 620,000 pounds.
Volunteers always find some bizarre items and this year was no different. “Highlights” included a scooter, hula hoop, lawnmower, sink, grocery cart, bicycle, wheelbarrow, and several lawn chairs.
Event organizers ran into a wonderful and unique problem this year in Ridley Park, where more than 150 participants pre-registered to volunteer at Ridley Park Lake. Sensing that this crowd would overwhelm the site, organizers created additional cleanup sites nearby and were able to re-assign large groups of volunteers to cover other areas in need.
Chris Townend, the event chair and member of the CRC board, commented, “This year’s cleanup was a grand success. It is a pleasure to see the work of so many people come together to help our streams and communities. The event couldn’t happen without the great support of sponsors, and the commitment of 30 volunteer site coordinators, the CRC board, and hundreds of volunteers on the day of the event. Thank you to all who made this day possible. I hope everyone will join us next spring for our 20th Annual CRC Streams Cleanup.”
