Fairmount Park in Philadelphia is one of the parks highlighted in the new PBS series 10 Parks That Changed America.
The series tells the story of 10 visionaries who took open canvases of God-forsaken land and transformed them into serene spaces that offer city dwellers a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
The 2,800 acre Fairmount Park was built around a new waterworks built in the wake of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic that killed one-fifth of Philadelphia’s population. A new clean water supply for the city helped reduce future epidemics.
Today the park features lots of green space, biking, hiking, boating, fishing, picnicking, and the Fairmount Works Environmental Education Center.
