Chesapeake Bay Foundation President William C. Baker announced Tuesday CBF’s Board of Trustees has elected Harry T. Lester as its new Chairman. Mr. Lester, from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is President of the Slover Library Foundation and the retired President of Eastern Virginia Medical School.
“Harry Lester is the consummate community leader,” Mr. Baker said. “To say CBF is lucky to have him as our new Chairman, the first from Virginia, is a vast understatement. His passionate leadership is an inspiration to all of us, staff and board alike.”
Mr. Lester is well respected throughout Virginia and beyond. He is a thought-leader who has been a tireless advocate for clean water, the arts, community collaboration, and economic development.
“There are many challenges facing the Chesapeake Bay,” Mr. Lester said. “Chief among them is implementation of the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint, restoring clean water to the 17 million people living in the Bay’s watershed. In addition there is the large task of mitigating the effects of climate change on the Bay and its living resources. I look forward to working with the Board and staff to implement bold actions that will move Bay restoration forward.”
Mr. Lester was a co-founder of Lynnhaven River NOW and currently serves on the boards of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, the Chrysler Museum of Art, Lynnhaven River NOW, Virginia Beach Vision, the Greater Norfolk Corporation, the Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission Technical Committee, TowneBank, and as co-chair of the Hampton Roads Business Roundtable.
Mr. Lester previously served on CBF’s Board from 2004 through 2009 and again from 2013 to the present.
