Based on a multi-agency, multi-year study of one of the most complex river systems in Pennsylvania, the two most likely causes for the population decline of smallmouth bass in the Susquehanna River are endocrine-disrupting compounds and herbicides; and pathogens and parasites.
Harry Campbell, Pennsylvania Executive Director for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation issued this statement Monday following the Department of Environmental Protection’s release of a multi-year study to identify what is causing the decline of smallmouth bass in the Susquehanna River.
DEP Secretary John Quigley Monday announced a major reorganization of DEP’s water management responsibilities to provide additional protection of Pennsylvania’s water resources. Under this new structure, the current Water Management deputate has been split into a regulatory focused deputate, and a resources and planning deputate.
The PA Association of Environmental Educators is now accepting nominations for the 2016 PAEE Educators Awards. The deadline for entries is January 15.
The Ralph W. Abele Conservation Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications for its 2016 college scholarship program to support students majoring in one of several fields of environmental education, including fisheries, forestry, ecology, wildlife management or environmental resource management.
The PA Resources Council Friday announced the winner of its 2015 Anti-Litter Video Contest in Pittsburgh is The Fight Against Litter, produced by Walking Stick Productions.
The 25 communities in 21 counties receiving Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s 25th anniversary grants to address illegal dumping, litter and beautification have achieved real results. Grants were awarded in Allegheny, Beaver, Berks, Blair, Bucks, Cambria, Chester, Clearfield, Clinton, Dauphin, Delaware, Elk, Erie, Indiana, Luzerne, Northumberland, Philadelphia, Warren, Washington, Westmoreland and York counties.
On December 8, the PA Environmental Council partnered with the Penelec Sustainable Energy Fund of the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, in coordination with the Public Utility Commission, to host “Untapped Potential: A Briefing on Hydroelectricity in Pennsylvania.”
The application period for the second round of Get Outdoors PA Mini-Grants Program will open on January 4, but applicants must be Get Outdoors PA Community Partners. Applications are due March 4.
The Department of Environmental Protection is now accepting applications for reimbursements for the 2015 Host Municipality Inspector Program through March 31. (formal notice)
