Theo van de Venne was recently elected to the board of the Westmoreland Land Trust, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that has preserved more than 200 acres of land of special value in Westmoreland County since its founding in late 2007.
Theo is a resident of Murrysville and an active community volunteer. His public service has extended to a number of government and community organizations, including: Murrysville Planning Commission, Murrysville Council (two terms), Westmoreland Conservancy, Murrysville Community Library and its Foundation, Murrysville Economic and Community Development Council, and Friends of Murrysville Parks.
Prior to his retirement, Theo worked for Fokker Aircraft in his native Netherlands, and then for Boeing and, later, for the nuclear division of Westinghouse in the United States.
Theo and his wife, Pia, provided the donation – 49 acres of land – which enabled the Westmoreland Land Trust to acquire another nearby 26 acres, and then add the total 75 acres to Murrysville’s Duff Park.
The Westmoreland Land Trust to-date has conserved the following properties:
— the 59-acre Otto and Magdalene Ackermann Nature Preserve in Ardara, North Huntingdon Township;
— the 22-acre Peter and Victoria Skena Nature Reserve in Murrysville (contiguous to the 55-acre Lillian Kellman Nature Reserve);
— 21 acres in Rostraver Township along the Youghiogheny River;
— 3.5 acres in the City of Greensburg near Cabin Hill Drive;
— 4 acres in Ligonier Township along Route 30 (conserved in partnership with the Western PA Conservancy and the Loyalhanna Watershed Association);
— 9 acres in Murrysville adjacent to Duff Park;
— 16.5 acres in Murrysville adjacent to Duff Park (a property formerly known as the Norbitrol Plan of Lots);
— 49 acres in Murrysville adjacent to Duff Park and accessible from Round Top Road; and
— 1 acre in Mount Pleasant Township, near Mammoth Park.
