PennFuture is marking October as National Solar Tour Month by announcing its fifth annual Pittsburgh Solar Tour to take place from noon to 4 p.m. on October 17.
The self-guided tour will consist of open houses and featured solar installations, which include additional information and activities. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with home and business owners at tour stops, ask questions, hear personal stories, and see first-hand how owners have utilized solar to meet their needs.
“During our annual solar tours, hundreds of people have discovered the power of the sun,” said PennFuture’s energy policy analyst Jennie Demjanick. “We’re proud to join with our regional partners to introduce solar to more western Pennsylvanians.”
Featured on this year’s tour is “Renaissance Gate,” an art installation integrating solar panels designed by students participating in the 2015 Art+Energy Camp. The piece is located outside the Homewood Renaissance Association at 7285 Frankstown Ave.
The event is free and open to the public thanks to underwriting support by Levin Furniture, the first furniture retailer in the nation to install solar panels.
Registered participants and solar owners are invited to a “solar soiree” following the tour at the newly solarized Kingsley Association located at 6435 Frankstown Ave.
The event – hosted by PennFuture, the Solar Unified Network of Western PA, Solarize Allegheny, and Pittsburgh Green Innovators – is held in conjunction with the American Solar Energy Society's 2015 National Solar Tour.
Interested individuals should visit the Pittsburgh Solar Tour website to register for this rain-or-shine event, view the map, find additional information, and download the guidebook.
